In this article, we delineate the relationship between nonsense, opposition and paradox in selected excerpts of the works of Edward Lear (1812-1888) and Qorpo Santo (1829-1883), considering nonsense and paradox in the light of the theories proposed mainly by Gilles Deleuze and Charles Ogden and secondarily by Jean Jacques Lecercle, Wim Tigges and Ferdinand Saussure. This article seeks to understand the relationship between sense and nonsense in relation to the way these theorists articulate the productive tension that exists between other kinds of binary relationships. Research carried out about the relationship between nonsense theories and the binary opposites delineated by pairs and more precisely about Edward Lear and Qorpo Santo has been extremely scarce, and this article seeks to contribute to the related literary scholarship.

This article explores the current state of biblical and theological literacy in the discipline of Victorian studies. It observes the ordinarily strong, careful, and impressive work done in recent decades, especially since some scholars have become interested in a postsecular approach to the field. It also, however, presents some egregious lapses in basic biblical and theological literacy that mar otherwise meticulous contemporary scholarship. This article hopes to open a conversation on how such glaring errors and misunderstandings have found their way into peer-reviewed work over and over again and to invite Victorian scholars to commit to finding ways to prevent this in the future.

Images of Irreverence: Nonsense Poetry in Translation as Exemplified by Edward Lear’s Poem “The Akond of Swat”

This article discusses selected “rewritings” of Edward Lear’s nonsense poem “The Akond of Swat”, focusing specifically on the translators’, illustrators’, adapters’ and editors’ attitudes towards the allusive nature of the poem – and specifically the reference it makes to the historical figure of the Pashtun religious leader Abdul Ghaffūr, also known as the Akond (or Wali) of Swat or Saidū Bābā, which may be viewed as orientalist or parodistic from a contemporary viewpoint. Recent translated and illustrated versions of the poem inscribe it with new aesthetic and ideological values. Two Polish translations considered in this article, produced by Andrzej Nowicki and Stanisław Barańczak respectively, demonstrate changing approaches to the nonsense genre evidenced in Polish literary circles (revealing a gradual transition from pure to parodistic nonsense). Graphic representations of the poem discussed in the article testify to the artists’ interpretive powers in redefining the genre of Lear’s poem, rebranding it as an infantile fairy tale on the one hand and a disturbing reflection on tyranny and “the war on terrorism” on the other.
