Invasive plant species in the West Indies: geographical, ecological, and floristic insights

Abstract: The level of invasion (number or proportion of invasive species) in a given area depends on features of the invaded community, propagule pressure, and climate. In this study, we assess the invasive flora of nine islands in the West Indies to identify invasion patterns and evaluate whether invasive species diversity is related to geographical, ecological, and socioeconomic factors. We compiled a database of invasive plant species including information on their taxonomy, origin, pathways of introduction, habitat… Show more

“…These patterns observed in the Lesser Antilles are consistent with previous island biogeography studies (Blackburn et al, 2008(Blackburn et al, , 2016Denslow et al, 2009;Kueffer et al, 2010;Rojas-Sandoval et al, 2017).…”

“…The likelihood of species to be introduced, established, and then spread (the introduction-naturalization-invasion continuum) is affected by a variety of factors which also includes geographical, ecological, socio-economic drivers (Richardson and Pyšek, 2012;Rojas-Sandoval et al, 2017). According to the pan-European project DAISIE (www.europe-aliens.org), which provided the most comprehensive image of the biological invasions in Europe (Lambdon et al, 2008), a total of 12,000 non-native species were recorded, which is most probably an underestimation of the real figures (Gallardo, 2014).…”

“…The great diversity of the floristic formations constitutes one of the unique characteristics of the current flora of the Antilles [21] [22] [23] [24]. As a consequence, these islands represent a veritable laboratory for the synchronic study of the vegetation and therefore the landscapes [25] [26] [27] [28]; Figure 1). In what follows, we will show, using a few examples, the diversity of the physiognomic types which reflect a great specific and morphogenetic diversity.…”
