Invasive non-typhoidal salmonella infection with multifocal seeding in an immunocompetent host: an emerging disease in the developed world

Abstract: We report an immunocompetent 24-year-old man who presented with a severe, invasive non-typhoidal salmonella (iNTS) infection. He presented with lumbar back pain associated with fever and rigours, which had been preceded by diarrhoea. Blood cultures grew Salmonella enteritidis. An MRI scan of his pelvis and spine showed that he had a small gluteal abscess and sacroiliitis. His condition subsequently deteriorated due to the development of a secondary pneumonia and respiratory failure. He was managed conservative… Show more

“…Impaired cell-mediated immunity can occur with prolonged corticosteroid therapy, alcohol abuse, some types of chemotherapy, and some types of malignancies, mainly leukemias and lymphomas. Patients with impaired cell-mediated immunity have impaired eradication of the intracellular organisms including Salmonella [12]. Patients with Hodgkin's disease have persistent defects in cellular immunity; either at presentation or in remission.…”

“…[1][2][3] Less than 10 cases have been reported with Salmonella species causing vertebral osteomyelitis or spondylodiscitis in the literature from 2013 to 2018. [4][5][6][7][8][9][10] Moreover, new cases in different countries were reported with Salmonella species infection that follows different orthopedic procedure including total knee arthroplasty, leading to Prosthetic joint infection. 11,12 Salmonella Typhi is a human-restricted and highly adapted invasive disease, but rarely causes infection in immunocompetent patient.…”
