Invasive meningococcal disease in Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam: An Asia-Pacific expert group perspective on current epidemiology and vaccination policies

Abstract: Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) imposes a significant burden on the global community due to its high case fatality rate (4-20%) and the risk of long-term sequelae for one in five survivors. An expert group meeting was held to discuss the epidemiology of IMD and immunization policies in Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. Most of these countries do not include meningococcal immunization in their routine vaccination programs, except for high-risk groups such as immunocompromised people and pilgrim… Show more

“…The two vaccines available in Vietnam are the meningococcal serogroup A, C, W and Y vaccine (MenACWY) and the BC meningococcal polysaccharide vaccines. 50 BC vaccine is indicated for ages 6 months to 45 years of age and is an outer membrane vesicle (OMV) vaccine that cannot offer full protection. 51…”

“… 42 In the Philippines, around 100 IMD cases are typically reported annually, with 50% occurring in those <5 years of age; most cases are MenA, although MenB is also observed. 58 , 60 In Egypt, a high proportion of confirmed IMD cases identified between 1998 and 2004 were MenB (51%), 61 although more recent data are lacking. 62 , 63 …”

“…For Asian countries in the Asia–Pacific region, IMD incidence ranged from 0.02 (the Philippines) to 0.2 (Singapore) cases per 100,000 population, with higher incidence rates reported in some subpopulations, e.g., in infants, children, and adolescents [ 9 ]. In the Philippines, surveillance data from 2019 reported that around half of all cases occurred in children < 5 years, and around 25% in infants < 1 year [ 10 ]. Surveillance data in Thailand reported IMD incidence rates of < 0.10 from 2010 to 2019, with the highest incidence in children < 5 years [ 10 ].…”
