The multicoloured Asian ladybeetle, Harmonia axyridis (Pallas), an invasive biocontrol agent introduced in North and South America, as well as in Europe for aphid control, drastically affected assemblages of native coccinellid species, local communities and people. Although the insect is common in several European countries and it was released in Spain for aphid control in 1995, no evidence of population establishment has been reported until 2011. In the present paper, 1) we summarize the records of the invasive ladybeetle in Spain and provide numerous new mentions, and 2) we follow for the first time an overwintering aggregation from autumn to spring and characterize some individual features which allow us to determine its phenology of the establishment and spreading. The results establish clearly that: 1) H. axyridis is (until now) restricted to Catalonia (NE Spain) but the invading process is in progress and the insect is able to occupy different habitats; 2) the ladybeetle overwinters successfully in Spain without significant natural mortality or parasitism; 3) the form succinea represents 73-81% of the overwintering individuals, and 4) the invasion takes probably its origin from Southern France. The potential impact of the invasion by H. axyridis in Spain is discussed.

In years 2015 and 2016 around 200 specimens of ladybird species Harmonia axyridis were collected in Slovenia. Ladybirds were dissected and checked under stereomicroscope for presence of nematodes. Nematodes were discovered in samples of ladybirds H. axyridis collected at Brdo pri Lukovici and Trboje. The incidence of parasitized ladybirds was around 30 %. Nematodes were analysed morphometrically and the characteristic features of Parasitylenchus bifurcatus nematodes were observed: straight stylet lacking basal thickenings, a bursa and a forked tail tip in the vermiform females and juvenile males. The identity was confirmed with 18S rDNA region sequence (acc. no. LT629306 and LT629307) which showed high similarity (>99.9 % nucleotide identity) to the P. bifurcatus sequences in the public domain. This is a first report of P. bifurcatus nematode species found parasitizing ladybird Harmonia axyridis in Slovenia. The species compromises fecundity of its host and has therefore a potential to be used as a biological control agent to control high abundance of invasive H. axyridis ladybirds.

Harmonia axyridis (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) has been introduced widely for biological control of agricultural pests. Harmonia axyridis has established in four continents outside of its native range in Asia and it is considered an invasive alien species (IAS). Despite a large body of work on invasion ecology, establishment mechanisms of IAS and their interactions with natural enemies remain open questions. Parasites, defined as multicellular organisms that do not directly kill the host, could potentially play an important role in regulating host populations. This study presents a review of the parasites of H. axyridis, discussing their distributions and effects on host populations across the host's native and invasive range. These parasites are: Hesperomyces virescens Thaxt. fungi, Coccipolipus hippodamiae (McDaniel and Morrill) mites, and Parasitylenchus bifurcatus Poinar and Steenberg nematodes.
