“…For example human-mediated passive dispersal with ships and barges can be excluded, as there is no such traffic along the upper Dniester and Strwiąż. The supporting role of artificial dam reservoirs in the species upstream expansion, often mentioned in case of the invasive goby species in large rivers of Ponto-Caspian basin (Slynko et al, 2011), can be rejected as racer goby was present in the upper Dniester long before the construction of such reservoirs on this river (Khudyi, 2002). Transport by anglers could be taken into account, however: i) there is no cross-border movement of anglers with live bait between Poland and Ukraine; ii) the results of tests for population differentiation between middle Dniester and Strwiąż do not suggest point-introductions of low number of individuals (possible founder effect).…”

“…The Kama stretch is characterized by colder waters and a shorter vegetation period. The absence of the goby in the Kama stretch according to results of stud ies of the years 2006-2007 favors the importance of the temperature factor in the dispersal of this Ponto Caspian invader (Slyn'ko et al, 2010). Possibly, the independent dispersal of the tubenose goby with drift ing algae is also inhibited by the presence in the Kama stretch of sites with distinctly pronounced elements of river conditions.…”

“…With respect to ichthyofauna, it was shown that heterogeneity becomes a cause of different contributions of isolated parts of the water body to reproduction of the fish stock (Kuznetsov, 1978;Kuznetsov and Galanin, 2000). The late 1980s were marked by an increase in fish invasions in the Volga and Don basins that assumed a pattern of mass explosive expansion espe cially for representatives of the family Gobiidae (Slyn'ko et al, 2010). One should expect that the rate of bioinvasion processes in some areas of the reservoir will be different.…”

“…Swiftspreading of numerous aquatic organisms beyond the borders of their historical natural habitats was caused by global climatic changes, active human hydro-constructing activities, large-scale resettlement and introduction of animals into new water ecosystems (Copp et al, 2005;Den Hartog et al, 1992;Davis and Shaw, 2001;Paavola et al, 2005;Havel et al, 2005). Furthermore, qualitative and quantitative destabilization of structure in populations of major native fish species created the free ecological niche of zooplanktivors in Dnieper river basin that also promoted the process of penetration and successful naturalization of Ponto-Caspian marine fishfauna (Slynko et al, 2011, Novitskiy, 2013.…”

“…Despite the fact that S. abaster does not make active migrations (Kuiter, 2001), the most probable way of its expansion in new areas is usually caused by unpremeditated invasion during various human economic activity like anthropogenic modifications of habitat and fish stocking (Slynko et al, 2011), transport in ballast waters (Lavoie et al, 1999) and other. Thereby, the chronology of its findings in different water bodies of Ukraine, especially in Dnieper reservoirs, characterized by some unpredictability and incoherence.…”
