Abstract:Intuitive knowledge seems to influence human decision-making outside of consciousness and differs from deliberate cognitive and metacognitive processes. Intuitive knowledge can play an essential role in problem solving and may offer the initiation of subsequent learning processes. Scientific discovery learning with computer simulations leads to the acquisition of intuitive knowledge. To improve knowledge acquisition, particular instructional support is needed as pure discovery learning often does not lead to successful learning outcomes. Hence, the goal of this study was to determine whether two different instructional interventions for scientific discovery effectively produced intuitive knowledge acquisition when learning with computer simulations. Instructional interventions for learning with computer simulations on the topic 'ecosystem water' were developed and tested in the two well-known categories data interpretation and self-regulation using a sample of 117 eighth graders during science class. The results demonstrated the efficacy of these instructional interventions on learners' intuitive knowledge acquisition. A predetermined combination of instructional support for data interpretation and for self-regulation proved to be successful for learners' intuitive knowledge acquisition after a learning session involving the computer simulation. Furthermore, the instructional intervention describing and interpreting own simulation outcomes for data interpretation seems to be an effective method for acquiring intuitive knowledge.

InfraNotes: Inconspicuous Handwritten Trajectory Tracking for Lecture Note Recording with Infrared Sensors

Lecture notes are important for students to review and understand the key points in the class. Unfortunately, the students often miss or lose part of the lecture notes. In this paper, we design and implement an infrared sensor based system, InfraNotes, to automatically record the notes on the board by sensing and analyzing hand gestures of the lecturer. Compared with existing techniques, our system does not require special accessories with lecturers such as sensor-facilitated pens, writing surfaces or the video-taping infrastructure. Instead, it only has an infrared-sensor module on the eraser holder of black/white board to capture handwritten trajectories. With a lightweight framework for handwritten trajectory processing, clear lecture notes can be generated automatically. We evaluate the quality of lecture notes by three standard character recognition techniques. The results indicate that InfraNotes is a promising solution to create clear and complete lectures to promote the education.

Abstract. The use of mobile computing is expanding dramatically in recent years and trends indicate that "the future is mobile". Nowadays, mobile computing plays an increasingly important role in the biomedical domain, and particularly in hospitals. The benefits of using mobile devices in hospitals are no longer disputed and many applications for medical care are already available. Many studies have proven that mobile technologies can bring various benefits for enhancing information management in the hospital. But is mobility a solution for every problem? In this paper, we will demonstrate that mobility is not always an advantage. On the basis of a field study at the pediatric surgery of a large University Hospital, we have learned within a two-year long mobile computing project, that mobile devices have indeed many disadvantages, particularly in stressful and hectic situations and we conclude that mobile computing is not always advantageous.
