“…Many researchers have noted that adults with ADHD may use drugs and alcohol to medicate themselves in an attempt to reduce their feeling of symptoms (Baker et al, 1995;Javorsky & Gussin, 1994;Nadeau, 1995). In a study of 132 college students who were diagnosed in childhood as having ADHD, Hines and Shaw (1993) concluded that drug behaviors were related to intrusive thoughts and found that drugs were taken to escape uncomfortable thoughts.…”

“…For example, Weyandt et al [2003] found that college students with ADHD reported significantly higher levels of internal restlessness than students without the disorder. Other studies have reported that college students with a history of ADHD in childhood report more intrusive, task-unrelated thoughts than control subjects [e.g., Hines and Shaw, 1993;Shaw and Giambra, 1993]. More recently, Shmulsky and Gobbo [2007] investigated whether explanatory style (i.e., one's pattern of thinking about the causes of events) was related to GPA in college students with ADHD, learning disabilities, or college students with both disorders.…”

“…Compared to students with and without LD, students with ADHD have also been found to be poorer in concentration, self-regulation and time management [32]. Additionally, they have been reported to have significantly higher levels of internal restlessness, and to experience more intrusive and task-unrelated thoughts [33][34][35]. These symptoms in particular could, at least in part, contribute to compromising their attention skills and academic performance [36].…”
