PurposeUrban centers, with their dense populations and evolving mobility patterns, are pivotal in addressing global sustainability challenges. This study focuses on identifying the key elements driving the adoption of sustainable urban mobility innovations, with a renewed emphasis on cycling as a core component.Design/methodology/approachEmploying the Service Dominant Logic framework, this research examines how various conditions associated with the cycling ecosystem influence the adoption or negation of bicycles as a sustainable mode of urban transportation. The study conducts a comprehensive analysis across 60 cities to unravel these dynamics.FindingsThe investigation reveals that five distinct combinations of conditions facilitate the adoption of bicycles, while two specific combinations lead to its negation. Importantly, the study uncovers the presence of a “lock-in” mechanism, a critical factor in hindering bicycle adoption in urban settings.Originality/valueThis research contributes significantly to the field of sustainable urban mobility by integrating Service-Dominant Logic with empirical findings from a diverse set of global cities. It provides valuable insights into the complex interplay of factors influencing cycling adoption, offering a nuanced understanding of the barriers and drivers in this domain. The identification of a “lock-in” mechanism as a key impediment to cycling adoption adds a novel dimension to existing literature, presenting actionable pathways for policymakers and urban planners to foster more sustainable and bike-friendly urban environments.

La única certeza en la innovación es la incertidumbre. La prevalencia de incógnitas heterogéneas, el carácter novedoso, no estándar, complejo, multivariable e interdependiente hace de la innovación un proceso razonado bajo incertidumbre. Cuando se describen los efectos adversos de este proceso, con frecuencia se hace refiriéndose a los términos riesgo e incertidumbre indistintamente dado el límite difuso entre ambos. Sin embargo, esta confusión puede llevar a tomar decisiones con deficiente calidad al suponer que se conocen con claridad variables importantes que afectan la innovación cuando en realidad no es así. Ante esta disparidad y ambigüedad teórica y empírica detectada, este trabajo desarrolla un análisis del concepto de incertidumbre, identifica sus características clave y ofrece una taxonomía de las fuentes que la originan en el contexto de la innovación. A través de un análisis de revisión de literatura mixta se presenta una proposición de incertidumbre que integra la percepción, los procesos de cognición, las limitaciones cognitivas, la brecha de información o conocimiento, la calidad y su accesibilidad, así como la inferencia y la construcción de modelos subjetivos que dan sentido a las situaciones experimentadas. Además, los resultados aportan la identificación de cinco características clave y nueve fuentes de incertidumbre: 1) Política - económica, 2) Sociocultural – socioambiental, 3) Mercado, 4) Relaciones de cooperación, colaboración y coinnovación, 5) Técnico – tecnológico, 6) Capital financiero, 7) Capital intelectual humano, 8) Gobierno corporativo - Interdependencias operativas y 9) Comercial. The competitive dynamics of strategic groups perform a major role in shaping the competitive background of industries. Strategic groups are sets of companies within an industry that follow related strategies or have comparable characteristics, such as product offerings, target markets, or geographic scale. Understanding these dynamics is central for firms to spot opportunities and cope with challenges effectively. This paper reviews the literature on the competitive dynamics of strategic groups. It analyses the theoretical underpinnings of competitive dynamics of strategic groups and discusses the central dimensions of the concept, underscoring the importance of competitive dynamics for strategic groups. Our aim is to sum up these perspectives while providing a clear and integrated overview through a systematic literature review. Such systematic literature review was performed using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) method. PRISMA is a framework with evidence-based data designed to help authors carry out a systematic literature review. This systematic literature review sought to consolidate knowledge on this topic. A discussion on the theme is carried out, an ensuing conclusion came up and, finally, avenues for further research are recommended.
