Introduction to the New Copolymer of Chloroprene and Acrylonitrile with Differentiated Properties

Abstract: The random copolymer of chloroprene and acrylonitrile is a newly developed rubber whose features and value propositions are not scientifically explored yet. This article focuses on the basic characterizations and properties of acrylonitrile-chloroprene rubber. Qualitative analyses through infrared (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectra confirm the presence of both the -Cl and -CN groups in the new rubber. As evidenced through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical therma… Show more

“…Chloroprene rubber (CR) is a self-crystallizing elastomer with high molecular regularity, widely used in flexible conduits, lifeboats, fuel system sealing and corrosionresistant coatings. 1,2 And its crystal structure is similar to natural rubber (NR). While compared with NR, it has better durability, lower oxidation rate, and lower sensitivity to swelling in non-polar solvents.…”

“…On the other hand, it offers lower heat build-up, better heat aging resistance, and ozone resistance than NBR. 10,11 These unique combinations of attributes of acrylonitrilechloroprene rubber are not achievable by either CR homopolymer 12 or NBR alone 13 or by their physical blends. 14 The latitudes of applications of any rubber in diverse areas are dictated by the mix of properties that it can offer.…”

“…There has been no prior report published on its functionalities by any other research groups besides us. 10,11,21 Consequently, the impact of different curatives on acrylonitrile-chloroprene rubber (NCR) remains uncharted to date. The key intent of this study is to identify the viable curing regimens and explore their influences on the performances of NCR.…”
