42(2): 303-322, junho de 2012Arquivo digital disponível on-line no site www.sbgeo.org.br 303 ResumoCom a proposta apresentada, baseando-se nos trabalhos relacionados à geologia e saúde, objetivase consolidar uma rotina de trabalho para avaliar os riscos geológicos à saúde ambiental em áreas de mineração. A partir da definição de uma área ou de um problema de saúde, procede-se ao planejamento das atividades de escritório e campo, constituídas por estudos geológicos e geoquímicos, e defini-se os materiais a serem amostrados (água, solos, sedimento de corrente, vegetação e ar) e a densidade de amostragem. Ao ser constatado que a área apresentava valores de elementos/substâncias acima daqueles permitidos por órgãos de saúde, procurou-se estabelecer a origem e o caminho que o elemento químico percorreu, desde a rocha (causa) até o corpo humano (efeito), e se tais elementos/substâncias estavam atuando nocivamente na população a eles exposta, por meio de estudos epidemiológicos e/ou ecotoxicológicos. Com o resultado desses estudos, é possível estabelecer o diagnóstico, permitindo, assim, combater, remediar ou mesmo sanar a doença existente. É fundamental que, na avaliação das populações expostas, ocorra a participação das autoridades responsáveis pela saúde pública. A comunicação dos resultados deve-se dar de forma cautelosa para evitar mal-entendidos ou alarmes desnecessários. Este estudo de geologia médica é recomendado para as áreas nas quais pretenda-se instalar um empreendimento, como a mineração, que possa causar impactos à saúde humana e ambiental. É importante efetuá-lo antes de sua instalação, durante a execução das atividades e após a desativação.Palavras-chave: metodologia para geologia médica; saúde e mineração; geoquímica ambiental; riscos geológicos à saúde ambiental. AbstractProposal to assessment of geological risks to the environmental health in mining areas. This proposal, which was based upon works of geology and environmental health, aim at setting up a routine of work to evaluate geological hazards caused to environmental health in mining areas. From the detection of an area or a health issue, field and office planning activities is carried out, including geological and geochemical studies, type and amount of samples to be analyzed (water, soils, stream sediments, vegetation, and air). Once an area show chemical values above the ones allowed by health agencies, it was tried to establish the origin and path of the chemical element, followed from the bedrock (origin) to the human being (disease), and if the element was harmful to the population living in those places through epidemiologic and/or toxicological medical inquires. As a result, it is possible to establish the diagnosis, thus permitting to remedy or even cure the existent disease. One outstanding issue is the involvement of all health authorities in charge of public health. The communication of the results should be careful as to avoid future misunderstandings or false alarms. Fluoride ions in drinking water higher than the permissible level lead to negative effects on the human health. More than 200 million people in the world were adversely affected from the high fluorine water. Endemic fluorosis originating from the consumption of high fluorine water was observed also in some parts of Anatolia, Turkey. Volcanic formations are found in areas with high fluoride concentrations in ground waters. In this study, fluoride concentration in ground water was researched in two villages in Sanliurfa where comprised generally sedimental formations thereupon the identified fluorosis cases on the primary school students.

The tin mining activities in the suburbs of Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria, have resulted in technical enhancement of the natural background radiation as well as higher activity concentrations of primordial radionuclides in the topsoil of mining sites and their environs. Several studies have considered the radiological human health risks of the mining activity; however, to our knowledge no documented study has investigated the radiological impacts on biota. Hence, an attempt is made to assess potential hazards using published data from the literature and the ERICA Tool. This paper considers the effects of mining and milling on terrestrial organisms like shrubs, large mammals, small burrowing mammals, birds (duck), arthropods (earth worm), grasses, and herbs. The dose rates and risk quotients to these organisms are computed using conservative values for activity concentrations of natural radionuclides reported in Bitsichi and Bukuru mining areas. The results suggest that grasses, herbs, lichens, bryophytes and shrubs receive total dose rates that are of potential concern. The effects of dose rates to specific indicator species of interest are highlighted and discussed. We conclude that further investigation and proper regulations should be set in place in order to reduce the risk posed by the tin mining activity on biota. This paper also presents a brief overview of the impact of mineral mining on biota based on documented literature for other countries.
