Introduction to Bacterial Signal Transduction Networks

Abstract: Transcriptional analysis using a DNA microarray is an extremely efficient method for analyzing two-component signal transduction networks. Here we introduce three such networks in Escherichia coli that were clarified using a DNA microarray: a PhoQ/PhoP system that senses extracellular Mg2+ and controls the gene expression for adaptation to environmental Mg2+ deprivation (Mg2+ stimulon); an EvgS/EvgA signal transduction system that activates expression of multiple drug efflux pumps and acid resistance genes; an… Show more

“…Several two-component systems (TCSs) such as vraSR , agrCA , and graRS/apsRS , were recently reported as being associated with susceptibility to antibacterial agents [17], [18], [19], [20]. A TCS, which is thought to function as a monitor and adapt to specific environmental conditions [21], is a prokaryote-specific signal transduction system that contains a sensor that encodes a sensory histidine-kinase and a regulator that encodes a cognate response regulator (RR) [22]. Recently, we and others identified one TCS, called BceRS [23], BraRS [24] or NsaRS [25], which affects susceptibility to bacitracin.…”

“…Detecting alterations in environmental metal quantities allows H. pylori to appropriately respond to changes in the host environment while simultaneously ensuring that its repertoire of metalloenzymes, which are required for essential processes within the cell, remain adequately metallated (Ge et al, 2013 ; Diaz-Ochoa et al, 2014 ). Many prokaryotes sense and respond to metals via two-component system (TCS) and signal-transduction networks (Silver and Walderhaug, 1992 ; Groisman, 2001 ; Eguchi and Utsumi, 2008 ). The typical H. pylori genome encodes remarkably few TCS, indicating metal sensing and response is likely done in novel ways (Panthel et al, 2003 ).…”
