The aim of this study was to describe the occurrence of vitality affects and basic affects and to shed light on their importance in terms of patients' inner change through art therapy. In an earlier study, where 17 women were interviewed about inner change through art therapy, a secondary deductive content analysis of images and statements was performed exploring the presence of vitality affects and basic affects. Nine of the 17 interviews contained clear descriptions of vitality affects and basic affects in the intersubjective communication between the patient and the therapist; these affects were also mirrored in the patients' painted images. Three cases are used to illustrate the result and how affects are related to inner change. These three cases differ from each other in that they describe vitality affects either; arising from the art therapist's empathetic verbal or non-verbal response, from a particular experience in nature, or from the interpreted symbolic language of the image. The common denominator identified as uniting the three cases was the intersubjective communication with the therapist. This study indicates that image making in art therapy gives rise to vitality affects and basic affects that contribute to inner change. It also indicates the importance of having trust in both the method and the art therapist.

“…I sought to embed my creative skills as a Dramatherapist into all aspects of the research process as a way to maximise active participation and receptivity. In designing the research study, I was influenced by three different approaches to qualitative research; inclusive research (Walmsley & Johnson 2003), arts informed research (McNiff, 2008;Kapitan, 2010;Leavy, 2015) and constructivist grounded theory (Charmaz, 1990(Charmaz, , 2014. Undertaking research in the field of Creative Arts Therapies involves a continual search to find new ways to utilise our creative tools to engage participants in research processes which are both accessible and meaningful. One of the key ethical considerations in designing a research project is the notion of informed consent. This article discusses an innovative approach to exploring assent with adolescents in a special education setting through creative workshops. This approach was aimed at enabling potential participants to make a more informed decision about their own willingness to engage with the research project. An argument for the role of creative arts therapists to embed their creative practices into research designs which represent more inclusive practice for populations whose contributions and accessibility are limited by traditional research methods is discussed.in an attempt to make research practices more accessible and meaningful to young people with intellectual disability/special needs.

<p>El objetivo de este estudio fue generar un instrumento cuya validez y confiabilidad permitan evaluar el desarrollo de habilidades centradas en la solución de problemas<br />mediante el uso de técnicas y material artístico dentro del espacio terapéutico. En una muestra de 216 participantes se validó una escala de 14 ítems con formato Likert. A partir del coeficiente alfa de Cronbach de .85 fue posible corroborar la consistencia interna de la escala, cuyos tres factores explican el 59.96% de la varianza total. No se encontraron diferencias significativas asociadas al género.</p>
