“…Moreover, the occurrence of an event is unpredictable, sudden and often catastrophic. These characteristics make the prevention of sudden cardiac death (SCD), which according to recent data can be attributable to a malignant VA in up to 30-40% of cases (Cobb et al 2002;Goldberger et al 2014;Tomaselli, 2015), one of the most important issues in public health today. In recent years, the identification of ion channel mutations that may trigger fatal arrhythmias in the absence of structural heart disease (SHD) has been an important new area of research (Napolitano et al 2012).…”

“…[10] Coronary heart disease is the most common pathology underlying SCA. [11] Despite advances in coronary heart disease treatment, SCA accounts for about 450,000 annual deaths in the United States (US),[12] nearly 100,000 of which are in persons with DM. [13] The pathophysiology of SCA is complex, requiring an underlying substrate and a transient event that induces electric instability and a ventricular arrhythmia (VA) followed by hemodynamic collapse.…”

“…Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is considered a major cause of worldwide mortality, yet incidence estimates vary widely because of variable data sources and definitions. 1, 2 Studies based on death certificate review are known to overestimate incidence due to inaccuracies in stated causes of death, 3 and investigations relying on emergency medical system (EMS) records 4 and epidemiologic definitions 5-7 presume cardiac etiology or infer cardiac cause of death. Expert panels have advocated for the use of precise and uniform definitions of SCD and to integrate multiple sources of ascertainment, 8 but non-cardiac and non-arrhythmic conditions leading to sudden death cannot be excluded without a complete autopsy.…”
