The shrub, Lantana camara L. (Verbenaceae), of tropical American origin, is a serious weed in South Africa and is the target of a biological control programme. The stem-sucking membracid, Aconophora compressa Walker (Homoptera: Membracidae), from Mexico was reported to be very damaging and was therefore imported into South Africa for biology and host range studies. The female partially inserts the eggs into the woody portion of actively growing stems, and guards them against potential predators. Nymphs develop through five instars to the adult stage in about 45 days. The adults and nymphs feed on the sap of stems causing the leaves to wilt, the flowers to abort and the gradual dieback of stems. No-choice experiments showed that adult survival, egg production, and nymphal emergence was high on L. camara, and also on related ornamental and indigenous species. The adult reproductive performance was higher on some indigenous Lippia species than on L. camara. Furthermore, the nymphs developed faster on these indigenous species and high rates of reproductive performance on these nontarget species were sustained over several generations. In multiple-choice trials, equal or larger numbers of egg batches were recorded from indigenous Lippia species and the ornamental plant, Aloysia citrodora Palau, than on L. camara. The treehopper, A. compressa, poses an unacceptable threat to indigenous Lippia species and has therefore been rejected as a biocontrol agent for L. camara in Africa.

India is a gifted country with rich biodiversity and treasure of medicinal plants. From the ancient times various plants have been using for healthcare. Among them, very few were studied systematically so far. Lantana camara is a flowering ornamental and evergreen plant found throughout India. The plant has evoked a lot of interests among the researchers due to its diversified pharmaceutical potential. The Plant is reported to be used in traditional medicine system since very long time for the treatment of various ailments including itches, cuts, ulcers, swellings, bilious fever, cataract, eczema and rheumatism. In last few decades, scientists and researchers have investigated on different parts of the plants. In continuous investigations on this plant, it has been observed that various parts of the plant are used in the treatment of cold, headache, chicken pox, eye injuries, whooping cough, asthma, bronchitis and arterial hypertension. These studies established the therapeutic potential of Lantana camara in modern medicines and considered to be promising candidate for the drug discovery. The current review has deeper focus on Taxonomy, Geographical distribution, phytochemical studies, pharmacological activities and toxicology of Lantana camara.

L’extension des plantes envahissantes s’explique en général par l’absence des ennemis naturels qui limitent leurs populations dans leur région d’origine. À La Réunion, très peu d’associations sont connues entre les plantes envahissantes et les insectes. Cette étude a permis de recenser, sur 20 espèces de plantes envahissantes de formations naturelles de La Réunion, 42 espèces d’insectes phytophages dont 19 sont endémiques d’une ou de plusieurs îles des Mascareignes. Il s’agit de Coléoptères, en majorité Curculionides, de Lépidoptères, d’Hémiptères Cicadomorphes et Fulgoromorphes, de Diptères et de Phasmes. Parmi les 220 associations signalées se rapportant à des plantes exotiques et à des indigènes, 147 sont inédites. La quasi-totalité des espèces d’insectes répertoriées sont polyphages. Les Geometridae endémiques sont plus étroitement liés à des plantes endémiques (39 % des données) comparés aux Noctuidae (3 %) et aux Curculionidae endémiques (18 %). On trouve également des Curculionidae endémiques et polyphages sur des plantes exotiques envahissantes ou non (respectivement 14 % et 8 %). Les Noctuidae à large répartition, et donc nécessairement polyphages, sont plus étroitement associés à des plantes exotiques (30 % des données), dont certaines sont envahissantes, comparés aux Geometridae et aux Curculionidae de même catégorie (respectivement 7 % et 4 %). Ces différences significatives s’expliquent en grande partie par la nature du régime alimentaire des groupes concernés. Les dégâts foliaires occasionnés par les Lépidoptères (Sphingidae, Noctuidae) et les Phasmes sont appréciables, mais n’apparaissent pas à eux seuls suffisants pour réguler l’extension des plantes exotiques envahissantes. Les attaques au niveau des graines ont probablement un effet régulateur plus efficace qu’il serait nécessaire de quantifier.
