“…Serampore became also commonly known as the ‘Gretna Green’ of Bengal, as eloping couples used to escape from forced marriages arranged by their families in order to get married by registration in Serampore ( The Asiatic Journal and Monthly Register , 1833(12): 249). The Danish government levied charges for such marriage registration, making considerable profits, but the Danish officers did not permit Europeans to marry local women (Pettigrew & Gopalan, 1998: 187; Yuel, 1888: 264). Contemporary Church Registers and other sources document marriages between Danes and English or French partners, but never mention any marriage between Danes and native people, as Lorentz Bie (1933: 22–5) confirmed.…”
