Lezárulni látszik az európai uniós csatlakozást követő migrációs korszak Magyarországon, melynek szimbólumává az Egyesült Királyságba irányuló kivándorlás vált. A 2010-es évek első felében főként magasan képzett fiatalok hagyták el hazánkat, akik gyakran hosszú távú célokkal indultak útnak, legnagyobb számban az Egyesült Királyság felé. De vajon hogyan alakult át a magyarok Európán belüli vándorlásának szerkezete és társadalmi összetétele az évtized folyamán? És milyen szerepet játszott mindebben a korszak két meghatározó eseménye: a Brexit népszavazás és a koronavírusjárvány? Ezekre a kérdésekre az adminisztratív nyilvántartásokban rögzített ki- és belépési adatok longitudinális megközelítésű vizsgálata útján keresem a válaszokat. Miközben a kivándorlás társadalmi bázisa fokozatosan kiszélesedett az évtized folyamán, egyre nagyobb tere nyílt az idősebb korcsoportok, valamint az iparban és építőiparban dolgozók időszakos és cirkuláris mobilitásának, a magyar emigráció súlypontja az Egyesült Királyság felől mindinkább Ausztria és Németország irányába helyeződött át. Bár az Egyesült Királyság népszerűsége a kivándorlók körében nagymértékben csökkent, a hazavándorló magyar állampolgárok jelentős hányada továbbra is innen érkezik. A Brexit népszavazás leginkább a hosszabb idő óta külföldön élő magyarok visszavándorlását ösztönözte, hatása tartósnak mondható. A koronavírus-járvány kitörése jóval kevésbé befolyásolta az angliai visszavándorlásokat, és az Európai Unió tagországaiból hazatérők – főként a rövid távú tartózkodást követő visszaköltözések – esetében is csupán időszakos változásokat hozott.

The term “return migration” is ambiguous, as discussed in King and Kuschminder (2022, p.3), and for the purpose of this study, we define it in line with King and Kuschminder (2022, p.3) as follows: “Return migration is when people return to their country of origin after a significant period abroad or another region”. Furthermore, for this study, we establish that the “significant period” is defined as “ever lived abroad for more than three consecutive months” (in line with Hazans, 2016).…”

Back for business: The link between foreign experience and entrepreneurship in Latvia

Research shows that return migrants have a higher propensity to set up an entrepreneurial activity or be self‐employed compared to non‐migrants. We take a multidisciplinary approach and empirically study the case of Latvia as a migration donor country to learn how re‐migrants participate in entrepreneurship back at home. We are interested if return migrants can be seen as a vehicle for entrepreneurship development and if it is worth looking at them as agents of business growth and innovation. Not only we measure the fact of being entrepreneurial but also explore sources that contribute to the higher propensity, attitudes to creating own business venture, level of ambitions and population sentiment towards entrepreneurs. Based on a nationally representative adult population survey of 8000 observations, we find that early‐stage entrepreneurial activity, established business ownership as well as intrapreneurship for return migrants exceed that of the non‐migrant population. The self‐perceived capabilities to start business is higher for those who have lived abroad, and fear of failure is lower. Return migrants also have better business networks and higher growth and export ambitions. Latvian return migrant entrepreneurship is not necessity driven but rather motivated by opportunities. Migration experience, length of stay aboard and capital accumulated abroad are found to be significant predictors of probability to become entrepreneur when controlled for socioeconomic and personal factors.

The standard literature and the classic typologies of return migration (see, amongst others, Bovenkerk, 1974; Cassarino, 2004; Cerase, 1974; Gmelch, 1980; King, 2000; King & Kuschminder, 2022) are only partially relevant, as they are applied to first‐generation return migration. In cases where second‐generation children are brought back to the homeland when their parents return, the reasons for return are those of the parents, which may reflect economic considerations such as unemployment in the host country or nostalgia for the home country (Kılınç, 2022).…”

The Greek economic crisis resulted in tens of thousands of Albanian migrants returning to their home country. Amongst the returnees were many second‐generation children of the immigrants, who either returned with their families or relocated as individuals, leaving family members in Greece. Since the second generation were brought up in Greece they are not true returnees; we call their movement ‘relocation’ rather than return. Based on in‐depth interviews with 158 second‐generation ‘relocatees’ aged 18–35, we ask: How are the second generation's future aspirations in the ancestral homeland shaped by family bonds, sociocultural factors and employment and business options there? Among the themes that emerge from our analysis are issues of agency, youth mobility, economic survival, hybrid and dual identities, and feelings of belonging. In their (re)integration, relocatees face both economic and emotional challenges. Our key finding is that, despite the need to escape unemployment and loss of livelihood in Greece, the young‐adult second generation struggles to settle in Albania, above all due to what they see as the challenging sociocultural and infrastructural environment. Women, especially, bemoan the loss of freedom that they enjoyed in Greece. Most relocatees want to go back to Greece when the economic situation there improves.
