Introduction. Calcium signals and developmental patterning

Abstract: Calcium ions generate ubiquitous cellular signals. Calcium signals play an important role in development. The most obvious example is fertilization, where calcium signals and calcium waves are triggered by the sperm and are responsible for activating the egg from dormancy and cell cycle arrest. Calcium signals also appear to contribute to cell cycle progression during the rapid cell cycles of early embryos. There is increasing evidence that calcium signals are an essential component of the signalling systems t… Show more

“…Another important well-known fact is that the emergence and passage of dozens (up to 50) of waves of an increased concentration of calcium ions released from the endoplasmic reticulum depot is the essential condition for fertilization throughout the entire ovum volume [ 104 ]. The mechanisms of realization and the physiological necessity of this are still unknown, although the phenomenon has been actively studied for many years [ 105 , 106 ], but one thing is clear that LILI realizes its biomodulating properties through activation of Ca 2+ -dependent intracellular reactions, activating the same calcium depot.…”

“…The most familiar case is the neuron action potential, the electrical aspects of which make it easy to detect by primitive means, even though it is fundamentally a reactiondiffusion wave 23 . But there are also non-electrical varieties: cAMP waves in slime molds, which direct the colony's organization into fruiting bodies 24 ; calcium waves, directly implicated in oogengenesis 25,26 , developmental patterning 27 , brain function [28][29][30] , and cell signaling in animals 31 and plants 32 ; and MinDE waves in E. coli, perhaps the most important of all because they are involved in a bacterial length decision 33 . All of these non-electrical versions require highly advanced technologies to see, and also required a bit of luck to find, so there is good reason to suspect that more exist and simply have not been detected yet.…”
