After surgical excision of tumors involving the maxilla, depending on their location and size, maxillary defects can have harmful consequences, both esthetic and functional. These effects disrupt all the functions of the manducatory system, namely breathing, swallowing, and especially phonation, thus affecting negatively the patient’s psychological state. Despite the evolution of reconstructive surgical techniques and the development of microsurgery, conventional obturator prostheses are still relevant. In fact, these prostheses restore the main functions of chewing, phonation, and swallowing. They also provide the patient with a satisfactory esthetic appearance. Moreover, they have an advantage in regard to oncology, making the possibility of surveying much easier. Maxillary defects are characterized by their highly polymorphic aspect, having a great impact on the nature of prosthetic rehabilitation. The aim of this work was to present the different clinical and laboratory steps of prosthetic rehabilitation of an acquired maxillary defect following excision of a mucoepidermoid carcinoma.

Après chirurgie résectrice du maxillaire, les pertes de substance peuvent avoir, selon leur siège et leur étendue, des conséquences plus ou moins néfastes sur l'ensemble des fonctions de l'appareil manducateur. L'alimentation est alors perturbée et la communication avec l'entourage alté-rée, ce qui affecte de façon négative l'état psychologique du patient. La restauration prothétique précoce devient alors une nécessité et doit obéir aux impératifs concernant ce type de prothèses.Les auteurs proposent, à travers un cas clinique, de décrire une méthode de réhabilitation prothétique semi-immédiate d'une perte de substance maxillaire au moyen de la prothèse d'usage existante modifiée et véhiculant une résine à prise retardée en vue de rétablir les différentes fonctions et de préparer les surfaces d'appui ostéo-muqueuses à la réhabilitation prothétique définitive. Given the diversity and complexity of maxillofacial loss of substances (LOS), its management requires the association of several specialties; the decision on a strategy or treatment plan is discussed during a multidisciplinary consultation meeting. However, this is unfortunately not always applied for reasons of the distance between health facilities or due to lack of time (or others). This collaboration is crucial in cases of maxillary, mandibular and extra-oral LOS; A preoperative consultation is essential to discuss the predicted extent of the surgical procedures. The maxillofacial prosthodontist designs devices for prevention, restraint, replacement, or reduction after obvious resection and/or repair surgery. Through this work, we propose a link between the maxillofacial prosthodontist and the maxillofacial surgeon. It would allow to corroborate their collaboration and consequently to facilitate the good progress of the treatment. Highlights
