Purpose -The aim of the article is to discuss the challenges from immigration to Nordic (gender) politics, theories and research. The research question is to what extent Nordic welfare and gender equality politics is based on exclusive solidarity biased towards the native majorities. A key issue is how Nordic gender theory and research has addressed multiple inequalities. The article briefly revisits the academic debates about gender equality, diversity and multiculturalism, which arguably represent two different paradigms: multicultural approaches have addressed the accommodation of minorities with diversity as the key concept, while feminist approaches have focused on gender (in)equality with gender as the key concept. Design/methodology/approach -The intersectional approach suggests that increased migration and mobility present similar challenges for the two bodies of thought to address complex and multiple inequalities within and beyond the nation state. The main part explores "the multicultural dilemma" in greater detail focusing on the intersections between gender and etho-national minorities in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Findings -Perceptions of diversity and gender equality/women's rights are contextual and dynamic as intersecting diversities and inequalities are embedded in national histories, institutions and policies. Scholars have demonstrated that the discourse about women's rights and gender equality has become an intrinsic part of Nordic identities and belongings. The article suggests that the new forms of inequalities among women can be interpreted as a Nordic gender equality paradox between the relative inclusion of the native majority women and the relative marginalization of women from diverse ethnic minorities in society. Originality/value -The intersectionality approach to gender and ethnicity in Scandinavia is in this article combined with a transnational approach to gender, diversity and migration.

European language activists have successfully campaigned for the right to use regional or minority languages in judicial contexts. Despite this, such rights are rarely exercised. This is commonly understood as a function of the unavailability and/or inaccessibility of appropriate language services, so judicial authorities in a range of countries are urged to do more to meet their obligations to meet the needs of minority language speakers. The article draws on a study of language use in one criminal justice system where the right to use a minority language exists. It uses a discourse analytic approach to explore how first‐language Welsh‐speaking criminal justice service users account for their choice, and usage, of language, and what purposes these accounts may serve for narrators. Despite their commitment to the Welsh language, none of the study respondents used Welsh in their most recent episodes in the police station or at court. Two competing discursive constructions were evident in respondent accounts which served specific objectives for narrators. A ‘down to them’ discursive construction, which drew on wider imperialist discourses, positioned narrators as powerless victims of a system in which they had no choice over language. This construction legitimised narrators’ claim to Welshness and castigated agencies of the criminal justice system. Simultaneously, however, narrators deployed ‘up to me’ discursive constructions to demonstrate resistance to the role of victim. This construction positioned narrators as more powerful and as exercising agency and choice in the criminal justice system. The article thus challenges oversimplified understandings of minority language use and non‐use in the criminal justice system.

Les années 1990 marquent un tournant important dans le discours de l’État mexicain sur la nation et font place à un nouveau discours multiculturel. Dans ce contexte ont lieu des négociations importantes entre le mouvement autochtone et l’État pour définir les termes de la reconnaissance à travers les demandes d’autonomie. Des positions divergentes émergent quant à l’implication de la reconnaissance des droits collectifs sur les droits humains et, en particulier, vis-à-vis des droits des femmes. Si les positions de l’État et du mouvement autochtone ont reçu une attention considérable, la perspective des femmes autochtones a reçu, quant à elle, bien peu d’attention. Cherchant à appuyer cet effort récent, nous proposons de considérer les perspectives construites depuis le mouvement des femmes autochtones au Mexique comme une alternative au débat opposant droits individuels et droits collectifs et contribuer aux réflexions théoriques sur la question des minorités internes.
