In this paper, we investigate the wave damping mechanism caused by the presence of submerged bars using the Shallow Water Equations (SWEs). We first solve these equations for the single bar case using separation of variables to obtain the analytical solution for the wave elevation over a rectangular bar wave reflector with specific heights and lengths. From the analytical solution, we derive the wave reflection and transmission coefficients and determine the optimal height and length of the bar that would give the smallest transmission coefficient. We also measure the effectiveness of the bar by comparing the amplitude of the incoming wave before and after the wave passes the submerged bar, and extend the result to the case of n-submerged bars. We then construct a numerical scheme for the SWEs based on the finite volume method on a staggered grid to simulate the propagation of a monochromatic wave as it passes over a single submerged rectangular bar. For validation, we compare the transmission coefficient values obtained from the analytical solution, numerical scheme, and experimental data. The result of this paper may be useful in wave reflector engineering and design, particularly that of rectangle-shaped wave reflectors, as it can serve as a basis for designing bar wave reflectors that reduce wave amplitudes optimally.

Water-wave interaction with submerged porous elastic disks

Hydroelastic interaction between water waves and submerged porous elastic disks of negligible thickness in water of finite depth is investigated under the assumption of small amplitude water-wave motion and structural response. The disks are either simply supported or clamped at their edges. Wave power can be absorbed/dissipated by the disks due to their porosity. A theoretical model based on the linear potential flow theory and eigenfunction matching method is developed to solve the wave scattering problem of the submerged disks. An indirect method, employing Kochin functions, is derived based on Green’s theorem to evaluate the wave power absorption/dissipation, and it produces accurate results at a lower computational cost than the conventional method. This theoretical model is applied to perform a multi-parameter study on the performance of a single submerged porous elastic disk, and an array of disks as well, particularly, in terms of near-field wave motion, disk deflection, far-field scattering coefficient, and wave power absorption/dissipation. Deploying multiple disks in an array is found to be a more promising approach for wave power absorption/dissipation compared to enlarging the area of a single disk.

This article relates with the interaction of water waves obliquely incident on a semi-infinite submerged elastic plate of insignificant thickness. The solution is obtained using method of mode matching. Reflection coefficients under the variation of various physical parameters: submergence depth, angle of incidence, stiffness of elastic plate and Poisson’s ratio, for two different edge conditions (i) pinned edge condition and (ii) sliding edge condition are discussed. Convergence and validation of results is also given. Behaviour of the velocity potentials around semi-infinite submerged elastic plate for different physical parameters are also analyzed. The consequences are explained through numerical and graphical results. More over energy balance relation is also discussed.
