Abstract:This chapter offers an introduction to ancient Greek Underworld scenes and the contexts in which they appear. It presents the book’s approach and argument that Underworld scenes use a type of intertextuality called hypertextual poetics to embed authorial commentary by providing additional, necessary information to both characters and audiences.
