Introducing Systems Engineering to Industrial Design Engineering Students with Hands-On Experience

Abstract: The article will present an innovative educational project to introduce Systems Engineering to third year's students in industrial design engineering at the University of Twente. In a short period the students are confronted with new technology, namely sensors and actuators. They have to apply this technology in a complex situation, the design of a home climate system or an intelligent automobile. They work in large groups without tutor. In parallel a basic course on systems engineering is given to provide the … Show more

“…For example, SE training is considered important to enhance the SE skills of employees in organisations, but also in engineering education, the importance of SE training and education is seen (Bonnema, Lutters-Weustink, and van Houten 2005;Godfrey, Crick, and Huang 2014;Van Nederveen et al 2008;Bhasin et al 2010;De Graaf, Voordijk, and Van den Heuvel 2016;Sheard, Lykins, and Armstrong 2000).…”

“…Although such literature is scarce, authors seem to agree that SE education should not primarily focus on transferring basic SE subject knowledge and also on SE competences. Therefore, SE is mostly taught using a combination of traditional textbook teaching and a learning‐by‐doing approach in which students work in teams on fictitious projects, or on real‐life projects adapted for educational purposes (Bonnema et al ., ; Van Nederveen et al ., 2008). Also, learning SE by seeing first‐hand the work being performed is mentioned in literature as a teaching strategy (Bhasin et al ., ).…”

“…The importance of knowledge and skills to improve SE practices is mentioned in SE literature as well (Sheard et al ., ; Bonnema et al ., ; Van Nederveen et al ., 2008; Bhasin et al ., ; Godfrey et al ., ; De Graaf et al ., ; De Graaf et al ., ). For example, in their article on SE process improvement, Sheard et al .…”

“…Smith provides a nice overview and discussion about experiential learning (Smith 2001). We follow an approach that is somewhat similar to (Bonnema 2005) with emphasis on active learning and experiential learning. In that learning setting, the systems engineering contents, have to be combined with engineering material (sensors and actuators) to design systems (e.g.…”
