Introducing High School Statistics Teachers to Predictive Modelling by Exploring Dynamic Movie Ratings Data: A Focus on Task Design

Abstract: With the advent of data science, recommendations for teaching statistical modelling include adopting a greater focus on prediction. However, there has been minimal research about the design of tasks for teaching predictive modelling from a data science. Therefore, a design-based research approach was used to develop a new web-based task that explored: accessing and using dynamic movie ratings data from an API; developing a model to generate prediction intervals; and modifying and running provided R code in the… Show more

“…Nevertheless, he suggests that the existing definition of statistical literacy should be updated to acknowledge the expanding sources and characteristics of data. More recent voices argue that data literacy should broaden what is traditionally taught in statistical curricula to focus on complex, multivariate relationships (Lee & Wilkerson, 2018), large unstructured samples (Ridgway, 2016), computational tools and methods (Fergusson & Pfannkuch, 2022), and algorithmic culture (Gould, 2017).…”

“…APIs used in their teaching included: Pixabay (image sharing website), Star Wars API, YouTube Data API, and the Spotify API. Expanding upon this work, Fergusson and Pfannkuch (2022) reported on their use of the OMDb API (movie rating data) in a workshop with high school statistics teachers. The teachers used a custom web-based tool, which supported both graphical and code-based interaction with the API, to gather data and build predictive models (Fergusson & Pfannkuch, 2022).…”

“…The database stores unique hashes generated by the server and retrieves them for use in the student app, as well as records attendance data received from the app and associates it with attendance sessions and geolocation data. c) Application programming interface (API): The system's API is developed using C# programming language and provides a secure communication channel between the student app and the server [23], [24].…”
