Introducing CUBES: the Cassegrain U-band Brazil-ESO spectrograph

Abstract: CUBES is a high-efficiency, medium-resolution (R ≃ 20, 000) spectrograph dedicated to the "ground based UV" (approximately the wavelength range from 300 to 400nm) destined for the Cassegrain focus of one of ESO's VLT unit telescopes in 2018/19. The CUBES project is a joint venture between ESO and Instituto de Astronomia, Geofísica e Ciências Atmosféricas (IAG) at the Universidade de São Paulo and the Brazilian Laboratório Nacional de Astrofsíca (LNA). CUBES will provide access to a wealth of new and relevant i… Show more

“…The current project builds on previous work from a joint Brazil-ESO Phase A study of a near-UV spectrograph undertaken in 2012 [29,7,30]. Unfortunately the project did not proceed further at the time, but the science case is now stronger than ever, as demonstrated by the range of papers presented in this Special Issue.…”

“…CUBES 1 was proposed to provide UV ground-based spectroscopy. As explained in Bristow 1 et al (2014), a gain in sensitivity using CUBES over UVES 2 , is at least two magnitudes at 350nm and up to three magnitudes at 320nm and shorter wavelengths.…”

“…CUBES 1 was proposed to provide UV ground-based spectroscopy. As explained in Bristow 1 et al (2014), a gain in sensitivity using CUBES over UVES 2 , is at least two magnitudes at 350nm and up to three magnitudes at 320nm and shorter wavelengths. In the same paper, three critical components were identified in order to achieve high efficiency: the detector, the grating and the image slicer.…”

“…CUBES is planned to be installed at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO), in Cerro Paranal, Chile. The CUBES instrument was first discussed in Bristow et al (2014) and Barbuy et al (2014). Future giant telescopes, like the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) of ESO, will be optimized for observations in the red/infrared.…”
