Introducing Case Management to Students in a Virtual World: An Exploratory Study

Abstract: This paper discusses a small, exploratory study introducing students to case management using role-plays conducted in a virtual world. Data from pre-and posttest questionnaires (to assess self-efficacy regarding a range of case management tasks) suggest students felt more confident in their abilities after virtual role-play participation. Also discussed is preparing students for learning in a virtual world, some best practices to consider when developing virtual world experience, and larger contextual issues o… Show more

“…In social work, a systematic review of five evaluation studies sought to describe the nature of virtual education in that field. Training targets included case management (Levine et al, 2013 ; Wilson et al, 2013 ), interviewing skills (Tandy et al, 2017 ), and diversity and inclusion competencies (Lee et al, 2014 ; Reinsmith-Jones et al, 2015 ). The review in social work concluded that while the research was typically pilot in nature, there is emerging evidence for acceptability when delivered as an addition to classroom instruction (Huttar & BrintzenhofeSzoc, 2020 ).…”

“…One should also consider the development of virtual patient simulations for use with mobile based platforms such as a smart phone or tablet paired with Samsung Gear VR, which could serve as a way to give students easy access to fully immersive simulations, but at a lower cost. Similarly, creation of simulations within open source platforms such as Second Life would provide another alternative for programs that may have limited access to the necessary software, or those with limited financial resources (Campbell et al, 2015;Levine & Adams, 2013). Now is the time for professional accreditation bodies such as the American Psychological Association (APA), the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) to consider the development of a virtual patient repository which could be shared among multiple programs, thus decreasing cost, increasing access to a greater diversity of virtual patients, and supporting interprofessional education.…”

“…Virtual patients are customizable in terms of age, gender, race, ethnicity, and presenting issue. In addition, the practice setting in which the virtual clients are situated can also be customized, allowing for interactions with a diversity of clients and practice settings beyond what one may typically encounter in his or her field placement (Levine & Adams, 2013).…”
