Introducing atmospheric attenuation within a diffusion model for room-acoustic predictions

Abstract: This paper presents an extension of a diffusion model for room acoustics to handle the atmospheric attenuation. This phenomenon is critical at high frequencies and in large rooms to obtain correct acoustic predictions. An additional term is introduced in the diffusion equation as well as in the diffusion constant, in order to take the atmospheric attenuation into account. The modified diffusion model is then compared with the statistical theory and a cone-tracing software. Three typical room-acoustic configura… Show more

“…Expanding a radiative transfer model, Navarro et al [25] end up with the same expressions. Figure 3 shows that a good agreement is obtained between the diffusion model and a cone-tracing software for a 30 × 30 × 3 m 3 flat room both in terms of SPL and RT [40]. In this example, the atmospheric attenuation is set to 0 and 0.01 m −1 corresponding to a 7.2 kHz acoustic wave propagating in the air at 20…”

“…Further studies related to the applicability of the method in rooms with specular reflection (Valeau et al, 2007;Xiang, Jing, 2009). The usage of the model in rooms separated by a partition wall has been reported (Billon et al, 2008b), as well as introduction of the absorption factor associated with absorption by air (Billon et al, 2008a). In later articles it was proposed to calculate the diffusion equation in an iterative process by using the finite differences' method, and it showed modifications which reduce additional energy generation and computational complexity (Kraszewski, 2010b;2010a).…”

“…Al mismo tiempo se presenta un estudio sobre el factor de difusión de los diferentes materiales, teniendo en cuenta el objeto modelizado y el valor del coeficiente de difusión asignado a cada una de las superficies [41]. -12 -Durante el 2008 se mejora el cálculo de la atenuación energética de los rayos debido a la absorción del aire y los condicionantes atmosféricos [42]. Al mismo tiempo se plantea, por primera vez, la problemática del grado de detalle de los modelos virtuales [43].…”
