Intrinsic vulnerability of the Isonzo/Soča high plain aquifer (NE Italy – W Slovenia)

Abstract: The paper presents the map of intrinsic groundwater vulnerability of the Isonzo/Soča High Plain, which is located between the Collio Hills and the Classical Karst Region and holds an aquifer shared between Italy and Slovenia. The map, produced at a scale of 1:25,000 and printed in A0 format, was obtained by means of the SINTACS method and shows the intrinsic vulnerability of the aquifer in terms of seven vulnerability classes, from extremely high to low. It is accompanied by four supplementary sketches that il… Show more

“…6B). The values of the calibrated parameters (hydraulic conductivity) in the PEST program are also realistic or in line with expectations (Zini et al, 2011(Zini et al, , 2013Treu et al, 2017;Fig. 5).…”

“…5). Infiltrations rates, Darcy flows on the northern borders of the groundwater model, with the exceptions of the Cauchy boundary conditions expressed with transfer function, were used as fixed parameters knowing them from previous works (Zini et al, 2011(Zini et al, , 2013Treu et al, 2017). To have overparametrization problem under control, ranges of limit values for parametrization parameters (K ranging between one and 1200 m/day) were established.…”

“…At the extreme eastern edge of the Friulian plain (Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, NE Italy), the Isonzo River alluvial plain is formed by quaternary sediments deposited during the Last Glacial Maximum by the Isonzo and Torre Rivers (Fontana et al, 2008) and is divided into two different geomorphological sectors (High and Low plain) by an East-West oriented Resurgence Belt (Cucchi et al, 2008;Treu et al, 2017). The southernmost coastal area of the plain adjacent to the mouth of the Isonzo River derives from hydraulic reclamation works carried out in past centuries to obtain cultivable areas from former lagoon and wetlands (Da Lio and Tosi, 2018;Marocco, 1989).…”

“…The river basin extends for 3300 km 2 , 2235 of which are included within the Slovenian borders, while the remaining portion (1065 km 2 ) is located in Italy (Covelli et al 2004). Except along the upper sector, where the river flows over carbonate rocks, the riverbed consists of a thick fluvioglacial and alluvial cover (Treu et al 2017). The average annual flow rate at the river mouth was estimated to be 170 m 3 s −1 (Covelli et al 2004), however tributaries dissipate a great amount of water during their way across the plain and dry condition can be observed in some streams and rivers, while the Isonzo loses about 26% of its discharge during drought periods (Zini et al 2013;Treu et al 2017).…”
