“…In comparison to externally activated scintillators, intrinsic (self-activated) scintillators have the advantage of luminescent homogeneity, preventing them from performance degradation when scaling up the crystal size. In the past few years, several high-performance scintillators self-activated by Ce 3+ , Eu 2+ , and Tl + ions have been discovered, such as CeBr 3 , Cs 4 EuBr 6 , and TlMgCl 3 , which have light yields ranging from 30 000 to 78 000 photons/MeV and energy resolutions from 3.7% to 4.3% at 662 keV. Nonetheless, frequently, such self-activated scintillators may suffer from self-absorption due to the possible weak electron–phonon coupling associated with electronic transition.…”

“…Compositions with Tl on the A site exhibit the density up to 5.98 g cm À3 and Z eff up to 79. [199] Therefore, Tl 2 LaCl 5 , [9,70,[199][200][201][202] Tl 2 LaBr 5 , [199,202,203] Tl 2 GdCl 5 , [204,205] and Tl 2 GdBr 5 [70] were most extensively investigated. Best samples reported in the literature exhibit LY up to 82 000 ph MeV À1 [201] and ER down to 2.8% (at 662 keV 137 Cs).…”

“…As a result of the presence of thallium, TlMgCl 3 has a high effective atomic number, Z eff = 67 [calculation methodology (Derenzo & Choong, 2009) in the supporting information], and a moderate density, = 4.47 g cm À3 (determined in this work). A pair of initial crystal growths of TlMgCl 3 have been conducted to assess the scintillation properties: Fujimoto et al (2016) measured 46,000 ph MeV À1 light yield with 5% energy resolution at 662 keV, and Hawrami et al (2017) measured 30,600 ph MeV À1 light yield with 3.7% energy resolution at 662 keV.…”
