Intrinsic photonic wave localization in a three-dimensional icosahedral quasicrystal

Abstract: Wave transport is one of the most interesting topics related to quasicrystals. This is due to the fact that the translational symmetry strongly governs the transport properties of every form of wave. Although quasiperiodic structures with 1-4 or without 1,5-7 disorder have been studied, a clear mechanism for wave transport in three-dimensional quasicrystals including localization is missing 8,9 . To study the intrinsic quasiperiodic e ects on wave transport, the time invariance of the lattice structure and the… Show more

“…Nano‐sized QCs are even more attractive, as they have high strength with ductility and also extraordinary specific strength at room temperature . QCs also have remarkable wave transport properties, including intrinsic photonic wave localization, which results in interesting plasmonic sensing behavior . The above exciting aspects inspired researchers to synthesize QCs involving different bottom‐up approaches based on interconnections of individual atomic/molecular clusters acting as building blocks …”

“…Observation of Intrinsic Light Localization: Recently, localization in defect-free photonic quasicrystals has been predicted theoretically for the case of 2D and 3D structures [10,33] using finite-difference time-domain methods. Investigated were the light transport properties of icosahedral quasicrystals and woodpile crystals of the same spherical shape and size using optical microscopy and the picosecond pulse propagation delay was analyzed.…”

“…Such an approach greatly simplifies the generation of the icosahedral structure since substitutions and decorations of tiles could be implemented without the need for higher dimensions. Our inflation/deflation rules have been proved useful in the field of photonic quasicrystals [34].…”
