Intrinsic modelling of shells

Abstract: We present recent results on the use of the oriented boundary (signed, algebraic) distance function and the tangential differential calculus in the intrinsic modelling of thin/shallow shells. We provide the link with covariant operators and show how to express them without Christoffel symbols. Such models are mathematically more tractable than classical ones.
