Intrinsic Heart Rate on Exercise and the Measurement of Β‐adrenoceptor Blockade

Abstract: 1 Methods of expressing the effects of ,B-adrenoceptor blocking drugs on exercise heart rate have been evaluated using a standardised exercise test. 2 In six normal subjects given atropine (0.04 mg/kg) on two separate occasions, the mean + s.e. mean exercise heart rate rose by 10.3± 1.8 beats/min and by 11.0± 1.6 beats/min respectively. This increase was designated the 'vagal effect and was not significantly different in the two studies. 3 After atropinsation, propranolol (0.2 mg/kg) reduced mean ± s.e. mean e… Show more

“…(McDevitt, 1977). We have previously demonstrated that when the reduction in exercise heart rate after afl-adrenoceptor blocking drug is expressed as a percentage of the control (pre-drug) exercise heart rate, there is a close correlation with the calculated reduction in sympathetic activity (Carruthers et al, 1976). Signi- logarithm of the plasma concentrations of atenolol, sotalol and practolol and the percentage reduction of an exercise tachycardia (Brown et al, 1976 a, b;Carruthers, Kelly, McDevitt & Shanks, 1974).…”

“…The increase in heart rate produced by moderate to severe exercise results largely from an increase in sympathetic drive to the heart (Carruthers et al, 1976). Reduction in an exercise tachycardia has been shown to be a sensitive and reproducible method for assessing the effects of P-adrenoceptor antagonists in man (McDevitt, 1979).…”

“…Subjects (Carruthers et al, 1976) in order to achieve maximum exercise heart rate. At peak exercise a recording of heart rate was made and 5 ml venous blood was taken immediately on completion of exercise for measurement of serum potassium.…”
