Intrinsic Adhesion Properties of Poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) to Pharmaceutical Materials: Humidity Effect

Abstract: Poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) is widely used for bioengineering and pharmaceutical applications, and its adhesion characteristics are critical. When used as a binder in pharmaceutical granulation, it covers the resultant granules and governs their surface properties. The intrinsic adhesion forces of PVP toward common hydrophobic (magnesium stearate) and hydrophilic (lactose) pharmaceutical materials have been studied as a function of relative humidity (RH). The effect of RH on adhesion force was more significa… Show more

“…For both methods, the blend films were manufactured using compression molding at 270 °C. In the first method, the blend sample was adhered to the polyimide foil using the aqueous PVP solution as PVP has adhesive properties [ 58 ]. The samples were allowed to dry for up to 24 h. In the second method, the temperature used for compression molding was 240 °C for PVP K 90.…”

“…Although the structure was severely deformed by compression, no crack was identified at the PLGA–PVP interface, confirming that reliable adhesion between two layers was achieved. We anticipate that the adhesive properties of PVP [42,43] contributed to the structural integrity, which is highly important to ensure the insertion of microneedles without breakage.…”

“…Our data also suggest that the adhesion between PLGA and PVP layers was strong enough to resist breaking at the layer interface. We anticipate that adhesive properties of PVP facilitate the successful binding between two layers (Lee, 2005 ; Teodorescu and Bercea, 2015 ).…”
