Intravesical Prostate Protrusion (IPP) versus Middle Lobe Volume on Ultrasonography in Assessing the Impact of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

Abstract: Background: Ultrasound is the main method of exploring the prostate. In benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), it provides important morphological information and assesses its impact, helping to guide the treatment. Objective: To compare intravesical prostatic protrusion (IPP) and middle lobe volume by ultrasound in BPH. Method: This was a single center prospective, descriptive and analytical study, over a period of 6 months, including 95 patients, undergoing prostatic trans-abdominal ultrasound. Patients were se… Show more

“…The mean age of 64.18 years and mean IPP of 14.29 mm found in this study is similar to the mean age of 66.18 year and mean IPP of 14.85 mm found by Tchaou et al 21 in a recent study in Africa. The mean age found in this study being in the seventh decade supports the fact that BPH is a disease of aging males.…”

“…Other studies have also reported significant positive correlations between IPP and these parameters 4,12,21,25,26 . Significant positive correlation found between IPP and PSA and between IPP and TPV has also been demonstrated by previous studies 4,5,12,21,27‐29 . This study did not find any significant correlation between IPP and age.…”

“…(65.94 ± 8.27 years),[ 31 ] and Tchaou et al . (66.63 ± 11.55 years)[ 32 ] documented mean age in the same range in Kaduna, Jos, Irrua, Nnewi, Cameroon, India, and Togo, respectively. The seventh decade of life coincides with the period of symptomatic benign prostatic enlargement following hyperplasia of the prostatic stroma.…”

“…The IPP may be caused by the middle lobe and/or lateral lobes (Fig. 1A and B) [3]. Prostatic artery embolization (PAE) is an emerging minimal-invasive therapy of BPH, able to reduce the prostatic volume (PV) and the IPP [2,[4][5][6][7].…”
