“…Pilot studies reporting the efficacy of BoNT‐A for treating IC/PBS since 2004 have revealed controversial results 12,107,108 . However, most recent studies support the effects of BoNT‐A in patients with chronic IC/PBS 108–116 . All nine articles mentioned in Table 3 reporting the use of BoNT‐A for IC/PBS utilized onabotulinumtoxinA.…”

Of these, one study was level 1 and two were level 2.…”

“…These findings suggest a benefit in treatment of neurogenic inflammation. Though results from available clinical trials are inconclusive, experimental data support the use of BTX-A in patients with painful bladder syndrome and interstitial cystitis [75,76]. Lui and Kuo [77] reported that BTX-A significantly reduced nerve growth factor mRNA expression, obtained from interstitial cystitis patient mucosal biopsies, and this correlated with a reduction in the associated bladder pain.…”

“…Smith et al [24] in 2004 evaluated the use of BoNT-A in interstitial cystitis in 13 patients and found a significant overall reduction in pain scores, 69% of patients reporting subjective improvement. Ramsay et al [27] injected throughout the bladder 200 IU (n ¼ 9) and 300 IU (n ¼ 2) of OnabotulinumtoxinA in patients with refractory interstitial cystitis and found statistically significant improvements in Bristol Female Lower Urinary Tract Symptom (BFLUTS) questionnaire scores from 6 weeks and in the King's Health questionnaire (KHQ) at 10 weeks. Kuo [25], in his first study assessing either bladder injections of 100 IU or bladder and trigonal injections totalling 200 IU OnabotulinumtoxinA, showed no difference between the two injection techniques and disappointingly only a 20% improvement.…”
