Intraventricular meningiomas: a consecutive series of 22 patients and literature review

Abstract: Objective:Intraventricular meningiomas (IVMs) are rare tumors of which the majority is located in the lateral ventricles. Most published series on the subject include only a few patients. We analyzed our series of IVMs with a special interest in clinical features, outcome and complications related to surgery. Material & Methods:22 patients underwent resection of IVMs from 1990 to 2010 at Oslo University Hospital. Surgical and medical records were retrospectively analyzed. Results:The IVMs were located in the t… Show more

“…22,23 We adopted transparieto-occipital cortical approach in our study. This approach is characterized by: First, a small brain tissue damage, although the distance is far more M A N U S C R I P T A C C E P T E D ACCEPTED MANUSCRIPT than the lateral approach, but the inferior, posterior and triangle ventricle parallel with the perspective of the operative field with no blind zone.…”

“…However, surgical removal of these lesions remains a considerable challenge because of their deep location adjacent to critical brain structures, necessitating some type of cortical incision and white fibre dissection to reach the tumor. 3 Although there are several ways to access the lateral ventricular system, selection of the optimal approach is usually based on the experience of the neurosurgeons [4][5][6] ,which can vary considerably and may lack a sound scientific basis. Moreover, due to the mass effect of the lesion, cortical structures or white matter may be unrecognizable or deviate from the normal anatomical position, especially for slow-growing lesions that cause remodeling of brain structures over a long period of time.…”

“…In our series, no significant female predominance was observed (53% vs 47%). The mean age reported in the literature varies from 35 to 47 years [9,16]; in our study, the mean age was 52 years.…”

“…None have been intraventricular in origin. Indeed, intraventricular meningiomas are extremely rare compared to those of other locations, accounting for only 0.5-3% of all meningiomas (22). Most intraventricular tumors arise in the lateral ventricle and over 90% occur in the trigone (3,17).…”
