Intrauterine Herpes Simplex Virus Infection Presenting as a Zosteriform Eruption in a Newborn

Abstract: There is significant morbidity and mortality associated with the transmission of herpes simplex virus (HSV) from pregnant women to their fetus or newborn. Although most commonly transmitted in the peripartum period, in rare cases HSV can lead to intrauterine infection. Cutaneous lesions are the most common manifestation of intrauterine HSV, and have a wide spectrum of presentation. “…There is increasing awareness of the importance of skin infection disease caused by HSV infection. Several of emerging cases were found continuously in recent years [2,3], which indicated an upward trend in HSV incidence. Extensive evidence proved that HSV viruses could typically cause severe afflictions, mainly because of the generation of genital lesions and severe infections like life-threatening encephalitis and disseminated infections in neonates [4][5][6].…”

“…This situation makes the diagnosis even more challenging as newborns often present with non-specific and subtle clinical findings, making a timely and accurate diagnosis of infection critical, particularly as disseminated neonatal HSV is associated with almost 30% mortality. 10 11 …”
