Intraspecific variation in spermoderm pattern of tribe Acacieae (Mimosoideae) using scanning electron microscopy techniques

Abstract: Current research carried out in Pakistan is the first report on spermoderm ornamentation of eight species of tribe Acacieae (Mimosoidae) by using scanning electron microscopic techniques representing two genera, Fedherbia and Acacia were examined. Different spermoderm ornamentation were observed, described and discussed for their taxonomic importance. Seeds surfaces of the studied tribe possess novel variations in macro and micro morphology. Great variations were observed in both qualitative and quantitative c… Show more

“…Scanning electron microscope (MIRA3 TESCAN model) was used to study broad micromorphological characters. Seeds after washing with 70% ethanol were mounted in stubs by sticky tape and gold sputter machine was used for gold coating and these seeds were observed to identify shape, periclinal wall structure, cell shape, and surface texture and were photographed (Alam et al, 2019; Ayaz et al, 2019). The characteristics of surface of seeds such as surface pattern, cell arrangement, and seed shape were identified via SEM terminologies used by de Queiroz, de Azevedo Tozzi, and Lewis (2013) and Barthlott (1981).…”

“…Six taxa had fine texture including; C. fistula , P. aculeata , D. sissoo , S. grandiflora , S. sesban , and P. pinnata . Two taxa had coarse texture including ; A. lebbeck and S. alata , The fine and medium sinuate texture was noticed in P. dulce , P. glandulosa , T. indica , and P. juliflora (Alam et al, 2019) (Tables 3 and 4).…”

“…scanning electron microscopy (Alam et al, 2019;Waheed et al, 2021). For quantitative examination, SEM is a powerful technique which determines the morphological structure of seeds such as ornamentation, surface, and seed sculpturing, which could not be made possible through light microscopy (Arshad et al, 2019;Rashid et al, 2018).…”
