Intraspecific Arabidopsis Hybrids Show Different Patterns of Heterosis Despite the Close Relatedness of the Parental Genomes

Abstract: Heterosis is important for agriculture; however, little is known about the mechanisms driving hybrid vigor. Ultimately, heterosis depends on the interactions of specific alleles and epialleles provided by the parents, which is why hybrids can exhibit different levels of heterosis, even within the same species. We characterize the development of several intraspecific Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) F1 hybrids that show different levels of heterosis at maturity. We identify several phases of heterosis beginni… Show more

“…Arabidopsis hybrid vigor can be observed in such varying traits as photosynthetic efficiency, seedling viability, seed number, phosphate efficiency, biomass, freezing tolerance, seed size, flowering time, metabolite contents, and leaf area (21,22). Of note, genes involved in flowering time and circadian clock control were found to be linked to heterosis by mediating physiological and metabolic pathways (21)(22)(23)(24)(25). Recent studies further confirm the role of epigenetic regulation of transcription in hybrid vigor in Arabidopsis (25)(26)(27).…”

“…Of note, genes involved in flowering time and circadian clock control were found to be linked to heterosis by mediating physiological and metabolic pathways (21)(22)(23)(24)(25). Recent studies further confirm the role of epigenetic regulation of transcription in hybrid vigor in Arabidopsis (25)(26)(27). Although Arabidopsis is not a staple crop, these advanced studies gave deep insight into the molecular mechanism of heterosis and highlighted the importance of integrating molecular approaches with phenomics methods for the study of crop heterosis.…”

“…In crosses between the C24 and Ler ecotypes, the F1 hybrids had substantial levels of hybrid vigor in vegetative biomass of the rosette and reproductive yields of seed production (13). At 15 d after sowing (DAS), the vegetative biomass of the F1 hybrids was ∼26% greater than the biomass of the better parent, and at 28 DAS, the F1 biomass had increased to ∼90% greater than the better parent ( Fig.…”

“…The F1 hybrid produced by crossing C24 and Landsberg erecta (Ler) accessions had substantial hybrid vigor in both biomass and seed yield phenotypes (6). The phenotype of the heterozygous F1 hybrid is highly uniform, but there were several phenotypes in the F2 population.…”

“…The F1 hybrids from crosses of the C24 and Ler ecotypes have a high level of hybrid vigor (heterosis) with uniform phenotypes in plant biomass (6). Recurrent selection of the phenotypes displayed by individual F2 plants produced F6 plants with phenotypes resembling the selected individual F2 plants.…”
