Intraseptal biatrial myxoma excised via the superior septal approach

Abstract: A 72-year-old man suffering from exertional dyspnea was admitted to our hospital. A computed tomography scan revealed a huge tumor occupying the interatrial septum and growing toward both the right and left atria. The tumor was successfully excised via the superior septal approach. Histological examination of the surgical specimen revealed that it was a myxoma. The patient recovered uneventfully and was discharged from our hospital 28 days after surgery. He received a permanent pacemaker implant due to sick si… Show more

“…The superior septal approach (SSA) is one of the surgical approaches used for myxoma resection. Cases that require pacemaker implantation after SSA have been reported to be very rare [4,5]. We herein describe the case of a patient who required pacemaker implantation after surgery with the SSA for the treatment of a left atrial myxoma.…”

“…In such cases, patch repair are required to close the defect, and many methods have been reported. 8) Because the defect was very large in our case, two patches were used for individual reconstruction of the right and left atrium. We found that this reconstruction method was very effective, and we suggest that it may be useful in cases of atrial myxoma for which extensive resection is necessary.…”

“…It is characterized by the presence of myxoid matrix, rich in acid mucopolysaccharides that are produced by a number of spindle-shaped cells [2]. Myxomas were observed in different locations, including the maxillary sinuses in two horses [3], the diaphragmatic lobe of the right lung in a sheep [4], and the interatrial septum of the heart of an older (72-year-old) man [5].…”
