Intraparotid facial nerve schwannomas

Abstract: Schwannoma is a benign tumor rarely found in the head and neck and much less commonly found in the intraparotid facial nerve. It is a slow-growing encapsulated tumor originating from the Schwann cells or axonal nerve sheath. It can occur anywhere along the course of the facial nerve. Patients may present with symptoms of facial palsy, but the most common presenting symptom is an asymptomatic swelling. Diagnosis is usually difficult before surgical removal and histopathological examination. We report a rare cas… Show more

“…In literature, there are rare case reports of schwannoma, which manifest with cervical swelling, including the tongue, thyroid gland, intraparotid gland facial nerve, the cervical sympathetic chain, brachial plexus, and vagal nerve schwannomas. 3,[7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] But the anteriorly extended intradural extramedullary cervical schwannoma is uncommon. 15,16 In addition to this infrequency, in our case, the intradural extramedullary lesion has an anterior extension, which causes observable and palpable neck swelling.…”

“…Intraparotid schwannoma accounts for 0.2%-1.5% of all facial nerve tumors in the parotid gland. 4 Intratemporal facial nerve schwannoma presents as a nerve dysfunction in the form of facial paresis while extratemporal nerve involvement presents as a parotid mass without nerve dysfunction. 5 There are no definite radiological findings of intraparotid schwannoma.6 MRI is the radiological test of choice for detecting facial nerve schwannoma.…”

“…A characteristic symptom of schwannoma is neurological deficit. Tumors originating in the sensory nerves may present as pain, those originating in the vagus nerve may present as hoarseness and globus sensations, and those originating in the facial nerves may present as facial palsy [ 6 , 7 ]. In this case, the schwannoma originated in the GAN.…”
