Intraosseous hemangioma of the orbit

Abstract: Intraosseous hemangioma is an extremely rare tumor that accounts for 1% or fewer of all osseous tumors. The most common sites of its occurrence are the vertebral column and calvaria. Occurrence in a facial bone is very rare. The authors aim to report a case of the surgical treatment of intraosseous hemangioma occurring in the periorbital region, which is a very rare site of occurrence and to introduce our own experiences with the diagnosis and treatment of this condition along with a literature review. A 73-ye… Show more

“…The term intraosseous hemangioma is generally used for lesion arising in the entire skeleton (38,40). In the skull area, intraosseous hemangiomas are more likely to develop symptoms, be it due to local sensitivity disorders (26,29), asymmetry of the affected skull area (21,81), bone destruction (39) or functional restrictions, especially in the orbital area (16,17,29). However, complaints are rarely reported in the case of intraosseous orbital hemangioma (55) and are mostly vague pain symptoms (38).…”

“…However, hemangioma arising from the osseous boundaries of orbital content are usually not considered in analyses of cases, reviews, or textbooks (1,(3)(4)(5)(7)(8)(9)(10). Vascular lesions with a locus in the orbital bones are rare (11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17). Reports on this manifestation are individual cases, small case series, and compilations from various collections of case reports (2,.…”

“…Two cases (cases 14, 66) were treated by curettage, and recurrence occurred in one of them. In four cases (cases 43, [50,56,57]) no treatment was performed, in two of them excision was performed latter due to the increased size of the lesion. Intraoperative bleeding was minimal in almost all cases; marked bleeding was reported in three cases (cases 5, [27,32]).…”

“…Treatment is typically total surgical excision with or without preoperative embolization [16,[21][22][23][24][25]. Given the age of our patient and both the invasiveness of angiography and the need for general anesthesia for the study, preoperative angiography was not pursued.…”
