Intraosseous and Extraosseous Variants of Dentinogenic Ghost Cell Tumor: Two Case Reports

Abstract: This paper aims to present both intraosseous and extraosseous variant of dentinogenic ghost cell tumor as well as a review of the literature. An 11-year old female patient presented a swelling and pain in the molar area of the mandible and a 15-year-old female patient reported a complaint of swelling in the right vestibular region of teeth 12 and 13(FDI 2-digit classification system). Microscopic examinations showed similar features which characterized by ameloblastoma-like islands of epithelial cells, contain… Show more

“…Amounting to the presence and extent of calcification, DGCT may appear radiographically as radiolucent, radiopaque or mixed lesion. Lesions can be unilocular or multilocular with either welldefined or ill-demarcated margins[17]. These findings were in accordance with the literature review carried out by Konstantakis et al[15] in 2013.…”

“…It was stated by Soluk Tekkesin et al[17] that intraosseous DGCTs are more aggressive than their extraosseous counterparts. More aggressive local resection is recommended for intraosseous variant, particularly if the tumor is radiologically ill-defined.…”

“…It could be unilocular or multilocular with a well-defined or ill-demarcated margins. Root resorption, displacement of adjacent teeth, and the presence of impacted teeth have been noted [ 12 14 ]. In the present case, the recurrence was presented as well-demarcated radiolucency causing disruption of the inferior maxillary sinus wall and resorption of the molar teeth roots, suggesting the aggressive nature of the tumor.…”

“…Intraosseous DGCT can have an infiltrative growth pattern and can recur after treatment [ 3 ]. Intraosseous variants of DGCT are more aggressive than extraosseous variants [ 14 ]. Aggressive local resection with adequate safety margins is advised for the intraosseous variants [ 14 , 15 ], especially in cases of ill-defined margins radiologically [ 1 ].…”
