Intraoperative transfusion is a risk factor for cerebral injury after cardiac surgery in children: a prospective observational study

Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Donor blood components are able to initiate a systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and potentiate neuroinflammation with subsequent cerebral damage. OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of transfusion on the development of cerebral damage during the surgical correction of congenital heart defects in children.
