Intraoperative portable ultrasonography localization of clinically impalpable soft-tissue tumors

Abstract: BackgroundMost soft-tissue tumors are clinically palpable; however, some can be impalpable to clinical examination making it difficult to plan surgical management.MethodsWe present a simple method of perioperative tumor localization using a portable ultrasonography machine.ResultsWe used the technique for seven cases, on each occasion identifying the tumor and facilitating the optimal surgical approach.ConclusionThe technique is reproducible and readily available, and we recommend its use.

“…The use of IOUS‐guided surgery for impalpable or ill‐defined cancers such as breast cancers, 15 liver cancers, 16 and tongue cancers 17 is well‐established 18 . Jagadeesan et al 20 documented the usefulness of perioperative US for localization of impalpable soft‐tissue tumors (5 benign tumors and 2 malignant tumors with a mean tumor diameter of 18 mm). However, they did not detail the tumor excision procedure or note the histological margins.…”

“…The use of IOUS-guided surgery for impalpable or ill-defined cancers such as breast cancers, 15 liver cancers, 16 and tongue cancers 17 is well-established. 18 Jagadeesan et al 20 Our study included seven impalpable tumors (all classified as R0), which were accurately localized via IOUS and successfully excised with IOUS assistance. We also evaluated the relationship of the tumor with the fascia to determine whether the fascia could serve as a barrier.…”
