Intraoperative Hemorrhage During Patent Ductus Arteriosus Ligation in Dogs

Abstract: The technique described in this report permits simple ligation of a range of different ductus morphologies in dogs of varying breeds, weights, and ages. In the event of serious hemorrhage, prompt ventricular outflow occlusion and ductus ligation followed by rapid whole blood transfusion is life saving in most cases.

“…In our study, none of the dogs that had acute intraoperative hemorrhage died in the first 5 days after surgery, although early deaths were reported by Birchard et al 13 Different techniques have been recommended to control bleeding at the time of dissection or ligature of the DA. 27,28 Limitations of our study include the retrospective design, which makes investigators dependent on the details included in records, especially those concerning complementary examinations before and after surgery. Echocardiographic results would have provided more accurate information regarding cardiac function in the dogs.…”

“…12,13 If our study population contained a greater number of dogs that underwent cardiovascular procedures, intrathoracic procedures could have been analyzed in subcategories rather than as a single group. This was because preliminary statistical analysis comparing the need for transfusion and survival rate among intrathoracic procedures revealed that there were no significant differences among specific procedures within this category.…”
