Intraoperative colonoscopy in patients with colorectal cancer

Abstract: Sixty-seven patients underwent intraoperative colonoscopy during elective surgery for colorectal cancer. Complete examination of the colon was achieved in 65 patients (97 per cent), albeit with insertion through a colotomy in three (4 per cent). A synchronous carcinoma was found in six patients (9 per cent), which necessitated a change of planned surgical procedure. Synchronous polyps were detected and removed in 24 patients (36 per cent); two had polyps with carcinoma in situ. The mean age of patients with sy… Show more

“…The association of synchronous adenomatous polyps in colon cancer has been reported to be 15%-50% and synchronous cancer as high as 2%-10% [1][2][3][4] . A routine preoperative colonoscopy has been recommended for patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer in order to identify synchronous polyps and/or cancer, that otherwise might have remained undetected at the time of the surgery [5] .…”

“…Langevin and Nvatvongs reported presence of adenomatous polyps in intraoperational colonoscopy in 28.25% of patients, while Cohen and Forde in 13% of examined patients (11,12). In a group of a Chinese scientist -Huang et al, the presence of adenomatous polyps was stated in 31.03%, and group of Spanish surgeons, supervised by Brullet, diagnosed polyps during intraoperational colonoscopy in 36% of examined patients (10,13).…”

“…When Vamosi-Nagy et al analysed the Hungarian material based on 31 intraoperational colonoscopies, he changed the extent of resection in 6% of patients (18). Brullet et al stated that scheduled extent of the procedure was altered in 9% of patients (10). Korean group of researchers, managed by Park, extended the scope of surgical procedure towards the result of intraoperational colonoscopy in 17% of patients (19).…”
