Intraocular Omni-focal Lens With Increased Tolerance to Decentration and Astigmatism

Abstract: Extended depth of focus technology is capable of providing clear and focused vision at near, intermediate, and distance ranges. Its high quality imaging is obtained under large decentration conditions and residual astigmatism. This capability broadens the potential use of the technology beyond its application as a simultaneous multifocal lens.

“…In in vitro experiments, EDOF technology provides clear and focused vision across near, intermediate, and distance ranges [ 43 ]. In population-based research, EDOF has been proven to perform better than monofocal IOLs at intermediate and near distances [ 6 , 7 ].…”

“…However, Ruiz-Mesa et al reported a statistically significant worse visual acuity with EDOF IOLs than MIOLs at preferred reading distances, but the testing methods and luminance were not described in the study [ 35 ]. In in vitro experiments, the EDOF technique shows a satisfying tolerance to the presence of astigmatism and decentration [ 43 , 45 ]. Overall, the worse near vision did not seem to affect patient satisfaction, which was high for both EDOF IOLs and TIOLs.…”

“…The EDoF IOL performs better than other multifocal IOLs when IOL power calculation is di cult, with su cient con dence, such as when calculating IOL power in post refractive patients 58 . Ben et al used an optical bench based on the Lobb eye model to compare EDoF IOLs with conventional bifocal IOLs (AcrySof ReSTOR SA60D3, Alcon Laboratories Inc.) and found that EDOFs main advantage was increased tolerance to decentration and astigmatism 59 . In a retrospective study by Torun-Acar et al, patients implanted with a trifocal IOL combined with EDoF technology were found to have high satisfaction, good contrast sensitivity, and signi cant improvement in overall vison 56 .…”

“…The solution presented in this paper produces continuously focused vision over the full required range that in regular eye is covered by accommodation of 3.00D (from near range of 33cm and up to infinity) [11][12][13]. All this is obtained with static element with high energetic efficiency and without any need of applying force by the mussels of the eye.…”
