“…In all cases the cause of bacterial endophthalmitis was determined by recovering the organism from cultures of intraocular fluids. Six of the 17 published cases of L. monocytogenes endophthalmitis occurred in immunocompromised patients (2,5,7,20,22,25), 6 occurred in elderly patients with good physical health (1,4,14,15,17,19), and the remaining 5 cases affected young healthy individuals (6,8,12,13,29). Our patient had several potentially predisposing factors, including laryngeal carcinoma and immunosuppressive therapy.…”

“…monocytogenes is a rare cause of endophthalmitis. Since the first case of endophthalmitis due to L. monocytogenes reported by Goodner and Okumoto (15) in 1967, to our knowledge, only 16 other cases have been published in the literature (1, 2, 4-8, 12-14, 17, 19, 20, 22, 25, 29). Almost all cases showed similar clinical features including decreased vision, elevated intraocular pressure, and fibrinous anterior chamber reaction.…”

“…Two cases of cor neal abscess have been reported [4,5]. L. monocytogenes has also been implicated in the genesis of iridocyclitis [6], though without bacteriological evidence, and in acute chorio retinitis [7], Endophthalmitis is exceptional; only 7 cases have been published [8][9][10][11][12][13][14]. A few common characteristics should be stressed:…”

“…could induce localization in the eye, by the circulatory way. In a few cases [8,10,13], the mode of contamination was thought to be ali mentary. In the case reported here the investi gation gave negative results as did also a cul ture of feces and an assay for serum antibodies.…”

“…Only 30 cases of uveitis due to L. monocytogenes have appeared in medical literature since 1967 [1]. The means of entry was hematogenous in each instance.…”
