Intraocular lens power calculation formulas in Chinese eyes with high axial myopia

Abstract: In Chinese eyes with high axial myopia with an AL longer than 25.0 mm, the 4 formulas caused a slight postoperative hyperopic refractive error that was less in eyes with a minus-power IOL or an AL longer than 28.0 mm and in those that had ECCE. The Hoffer Q formula provided the best predictive result, and Holladay 1 and SRK/T were comparable in IOL power calculation. The SRK II was the least accurate in all subgroups.

“…2, 8, 10 Zaldivar et al 11 reported that 92% of eyes were within ±1.0D when using SRK/T, and concluded that in eyes with axial lengths ≥ 27.0 mm, current third-and fourth-generation lens calculation formulas have a tendency to over minus patients between -1.0 and -4.0 D, leaving patients with postoperative hyperopia. Similarly, Tsang et al 2 found that SRK/T formula showed a slight tendency toward resultant hyperopia, resulting in a postoperative hyperopic refractive error.…”

“…1 However, the refractive outcome is also less predictable in highly myopic eyes due to inaccuracies in axial length (AL) measurement in the presence of posterior staphyloma and poor fixation from macular disease. 2 It has been accepted that monofocal IOL implantation corrects visual acuity for either distance or near vision.…”

“…Wang JK, et al 7 concluded IOL power calculated using the Haigis formula predicted the best refractive outcome in long eyes. El-Nafees R, et al 8 and Tsang CS, et al 9 found the performance of SRK -T to give least amount of error. Petermeier and Szurman.…”

“…Die SRK-T-Formel ist eine etablierte Methode zur Biometrie bei Patienten mit hoher Achsenmyopie und hinsichtlich refraktiver Ergebnisse der Haigis-oder Holladay-1-Formel ähnlich [11,15,18,20]. Haigis [4] hat aber kürzlich die Bedeutung unterschiedlicher A-Konstanten für Positiv-Dioptrien-und Negativ-Dioptrien-IOLs hervorgehoben.…”
